The JRC published a new set of templates for recording nanomaterial experimental data on physicochemical properties in a harmonised format. This is key to ensure comparability and re-use of these data to promote new knowledge and to support regulatory processes.
Evaluations of nanomaterials rely on the availability of adequate and reproducible data on their physicochemical properties. To this end, it is important that existing physicochemical data are reported in standardised formats and then curated, stored and made accessible to scientists and regulators for re-use.
In 2017, the EU-funded FP7 flagship project NANoREG published, under JRC's leadership, a set of Excel® templates aimed to facilitate the reporting of nanomaterial data on 33 endpoints generated during laboratory work. Inspired by this work, the 3-year EU-funded H2020 project GRACIOUS has created a new set of templates covering physicochemical properties and measurement techniques relevant for the project. In particular, GRACIOUS partners developed 6 new Excel® templates and updated 3 existing NANoREG templates.
As partner, the JRC contributes to most of GRACIOUS work packages with expertise on physical chemical characterisation of nanomaterials, regulatory frameworks and tools, hazard and risk assessment for environment and human health effects, and knowledge on grouping, read-across and safe-by-design approaches already developed within previous projects.
Each template is based on ISA-TAB-Nano standard, free to use and adapt under Creative Commons – Share Alike license, and relates the result of an experiment to the conditions, protocols, method and instrument that have been used to generate it. Promoting the use of these templates will increase data quality and completeness in public repositories and ensure reproducibility, comparability and re-use of the data according to the FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) principles.
