This year is the 10th anniversary of the Biomass Mandate, a research and monitoring task given to the JRC by European Commission services to deliver scientifically-robust assessments of biomass supply, demand and uses at both EU and global level.
To mark this important milestone, we will present the 10th-anniversary edition of the Biomass report, a rigorous piece of research that encompasses the state and uses of biomass at European level, and calls for concrete policy actions to stave off the depletion of our invaluable natural resources.

Description

There is a need to regenerate our ecosystems using innovative and management approaches that incorporate climate change adaptation, to ensure the longevity of biomass supply and to make the promise of a circular and bio-based economy a reality.
During this satellite event of the European R&I Days, the JRC will present its latest scientific data in its report on biomass production and uses and will host a panel discussion on the future needs of biological resources in the context of the upcoming EU Bioeconomy Strategy and the recent EU Life Sciences Strategy.
The report calls for a systems-level approach in policymaking to the overarching and complex topic of natural resource management.
The leading questions of the event will be
- What is the role of biomass in our future?
- How can we ensure the longevity of biomass production?
- How can we reconcile the different expectations of biomass that are present in the different pillars of the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy?
