Living with radioactivity: Monitoring and Harmonization

The JRC is organising a workshop (90 minutes) titled “Living with radioactivity” during the 18th European Week of Regions and Cities 2020 on 14 October at 11:30- 13:00. The workshop is covering the topic of “Cohesion and Cooperation” and is organised in collaboration with DG Energy.

The workshop is structured in 4 talks (20 min with Q/A) on regional experiences about monitoring, harmonizing and communicating environmental radioactivity data.

- Overview of European legal basis and requirements concerning environmental radioactivity (Stefan Mundigl, European Commission, DG Energy)

- Regional experiences for developing surveys and mapping indoor radon concentration and risk (Bernd Hoffmann, BfS, Germany)

- A successfully example of cooperation: EURDEP system, a network for the exchange of radiological monitoring data (Patrick Breuskin, Division of Radioprotection / Ministry of Health, Luxembourg)

- Harmonization of environmental radioactivity measurements: Proficiency Tests, data collection and viewing (Denis Glavič-Cindro, Jožef Stefan Institute, Slovenia).

The workshop will be opened with two short addresses (tbc) by Massimo Garribba (Deputy Director General, European Commission, DG Energy) and Maria Betti (Director, European Commission, Joint Research Centre).

The entire session and the Q/A will be moderated by Franck Wastin (Head of Unit, European Commission, Joint Research Centre).

Background information

The JRC aims at presenting and discussing experiences in monitoring and harmonising environmental radioactivity data at regional, national and European level, as well as focusing on aspects linked to the communication of the results to the population (website, etc.).

The topic will allow bringing together EU institutions, politicians, decision-makers, experts and public proving an exchange of experiences in cooperation and networking.

Occurrence of natural radioactivity in the environment can vary from region to region and have impact on the health of the public and workers, e.g. after cigarette smoking radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Embarking different stakeholders, politicians, decision-makers, experts and public partners on a dialogue proving an exchange of experiences in cooperation and networking will support disseminating a better understanding of the risks associated and of their prevention.
