Description
Covid-19 is a new disease that wreaked havoc across the globe and now requires a rapid response from policy makers, health professionals and scientists.
Researchers around the world have mobilised to study the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the resulting disease, generating a flood of biological data from a wide range of disciplines. In order to capitalise on this information to create treatments and vaccines, the knowledge needs to be organised, curated, and made widely available in an easily accessible framework.
To address this need the Joint Research Centre has started a global, interdisciplinary project called CIAO (Modelling the pathogenesis of Covid-19 using the Adverse Outcome Pathway framework).
CIAO aims at providing an overarching knowledge entry point to Covid-19 research separating signal from noise and giving scientists the possibility to quickly grasp dependencies between research fields not normally collaborating through Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOP).
The Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) framework, championed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and there co-managed by the EU Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM) on behalf of the JRC, provides such an organising structure. Although originally developed to address issues in toxicology, the framework applies equally well to the disease domain.
The AOP framework is designed to weave together knowledge from different disciplines addressing different levels of biological organisation (e.g. molecular, cellular, organ, individual, population) in a transparent way that can be crowdsourced and evaluated – facilitating collaboration, curation and access to implementable biological knowledge.
4 August, 13:30 CEST | JRC webinar 'Modelling the pathogenesis of Covid-19 using the Adverse Outcome Pathway framework (CIAO)'
The CIAO project team is now looking for volunteers to join the crowdsourcing effort from all scientific disciplines involved in Covid-19 research, e.g. (but not limited to) virology, immunology, epidemiology, biology, life sciences in general, computational science, clinical research etc. All levels of involvement are welcome – from sporadic contributions to becoming a full-fledged project team member!
We therefore invite you to attend a webinar introducing the CIAO project and addressing questions you might have before joining the crowd.
