Evidence shows that experience of poverty and exclusion over several generations may deeply affect what people believe about themselves, what they expect from the future, and how they take decisions.
Understanding this may improve the effectiveness of support measures for people in poverty. Tackling poverty requires an improvement in economic conditions for the poor, and real access to quality education, employment, housing and health services. But it may also require a less visible obstacle to be addressed — that is, how the actual experience of poverty and exclusion hinders aspirations, self-esteem, hope and agency, particularly when poverty and exclusion have permeated families and their environment for many generations.
A new JRC report gathers and summarises findings from behavioural, neuroscientific, sociological and economic studies on the impact of prolonged experiences of poverty and exclusion on mindsets. It also outlines possible solutions suggested by research and field experience.
This online JRC Fairness Community of Practice event discussed some key findings of the report with renowned experts in the field. It also offered the opportunity for an interactive debate on the implications and relevance of the issue for policy.
