There is a broad consensus that the COVID-19 crisis is hitting the most vulnerable groups hardest, and social inequalities,including gender inequalities are therefore likely to increase as a consequence of the pandemic. The European Commission’s Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 identifies gender equality as a core principle for the EU and a priority goal that it needs to progress towards. However, the COVID-19 crisis jeopardises progress in this area and opens up new challenges on the road towards equality between men and women. In early 2020 a JRC report on the gender aspects of COVID-19 made a first attempt to highlight these risks, and since that they also attracted great attention in various forums within and beyond the EU.
This first online JRC Fairness Community of Practice seminar has contributed to this topical discussion by providing insights for policymakers on one key aspect of the crisis situation: the gender distribution of paid and unpaid work. It was based upon research carried out during the recent lockdowns and highlights the possible longer-term consequences of the findings, while offering policy-relevant considerations to better support gender equality during and after the pandemic. The event started with short presentations by three distinguished gender experts and continued with an interactive discussion between the panel and the audience on the possible consequences of the crisis on gender values, the division of childcare and housework, and gender inequalities in the labour market.
