The European Commission and environmental and health stakeholders implement the European Sentinel System that traces SARS-CoV-2 in the population using wastewater.
EU Member States connect their wastewater surveillance for better pandemic management
Following the recent EC Recommendation on a common approach to establish a systematic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants in wastewaters in the EU, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has been tasked with creating a collaborative platform to connect wastewater-based surveillance of the virus and its variants in the EU Member States.
After carrying out a successful ad-hoc assessment of variants of concern (A pan-European study of SARS-CoV-2 variants in wastewater 2 under the EU Sewage Sentinel System), the European Commission has created an EU Sewage Sentinel System for SARS-CoV-2, which is coordinated jointly by the JRC, DG Environment, DG SANTE and stakeholders in European water and health sectors.
Towards business solutions for a wastewater surveillance approach – Town Hall Meeting and e-Exhibition
A series of four virtual ‘Town Hall’ events were organised over the past year in close collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and other national and international partners to facilitate the exchange of best practices and experiences. The platform has now reached a high level of technological readiness, enabling the screening of large population groups to identify where more detailed analysis is needed. This can ultimately help speed up the detection of variants and be a valuable part of an increased genomic and epidemiological surveillance campaign.
This fifth Town Hall Meeting, organised by the Commission in close collaboration with the stakeholders from the European water and health sector, will showcase European and international solutions in place. Participants from around the world will present business solutions, case studies, science advances and decision-support tools for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants, gathering the significant amount of information available from the ongoing national and regional studies in the EU.
