EU PVSEC 2023 Wraps Up – Innovations are a decisive factor in the global PV race

The European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition (EU PVSEC) 2023 concluded on 22 September 2023, marking another successful year of discussing the latest photovoltaic research and technology developments.

Coordinated by the European Commission Joint Research Centre, the scientific programme gathered renowned researchers and industry pioneers to share their insights through more than 1050 presentations. The exhibition hall was bustling with activity as companies and organisations presented their latest products and services. 

Photovoltaic paves the way to combat climate change

The key message is the pivotal role of photovoltaic technology in mitigating climate change, urgently called for by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) this year. Indeed, as fossil fuel subsidies surged to a record in 2022, scaling back these subsidies would reduce air pollution, generate revenue and make an important contribution to slowing climate change. This is particularly significant given that solar PV has been consistently cheaper than new coal- or gas-fired power plants in most countries. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), solar projects now offer some of the most affordable electricity rates ever recorded.

Building on a rapidly expanding production and deployment rate and 1.5 TW of global installed capacity expected by the end of 2023, the PV community discussed the pathways and challenges towards becoming a major, sustainable and circular clean energy source in the coming decades.

Awarding of the Becquerel Prize

During the opening ceremony of the EU PVSEC 2023, Dr. Gunter Erfurt was awarded the prestigious Alexander Edmond Becquerel Prize. This recognises his achievements in revitalising the advanced manufacturing of silicon solar cells and modules in Europe through his leadership at Meyer Burger.

EU PVSEC 2024 in Vienna, Austria

The EU PVSEC is set to return in 2024 in the picturesque city of Vienna, Austria from 23 - 27 September.

    EU PVSEC 2023 Programme

    The scientific conference programme comprises plenary, oral and visual presentations on the latest scientific, technological and market-related trends. 

    Coordinated by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, this year's programme focuses on 5 key topics:

    • Silicon Materials and Cells 
    • Thin Films and New Concepts
    • Photovoltaic Modules and BoS Components
    • PV Systems Engineering, Integrated/Applied PV
    • PV in the Energy Transition

    The technology topics encompass new developments in silicon cells, perovskites and tandems, amongst others. The modules and systems topics look at design, implementation, performance and operation, including the increasingly important role of digitalisation and machine learning, as well as the multitude of applications in areas such as buildings (BIPV), agriculture (Agri PV) and on water (Floating PV). The energy transition topic covers the wide range of multidisciplinary efforts required to ensure the rapid deployment of PV technologies on a massive and global scale as a key element of the ecological transition, including, technical, storage, economic, sustainability, and societal challenges.
