On 21 May 2026, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the ADAPT Centre co-organised the workshop Emerging multidisciplinary computing visions: early-stage researchers shaping shared futures during the 19th International Conference on Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP.ai) in Brussels.
Organised with the support of the JRC’s FreshMinds initiative, the workshop brought together early-career researchers, senior experts and practitioners to exchange ideas on artificial intelligence, digital regulation and governance, while reflecting on the changing career landscape for researchers working across disciplines.
About the workshop
Five early-career researchers presented ongoing work addressing questions such as AI sovereignty and public procurement, privacy and memory in agentic AI, liability for AI-enabled chatbots, intersectional approaches to AI risk governance, and transparency in large language model interfaces.
The workshop combined short research pitches with a World Café-style feedback session, enabling participants to discuss the projects directly with the researchers and share questions, resources and constructive suggestions.
A second interactive session used a fishbowl format to explore career development in AI-related fields. Participants discussed the impact of AI on entry-level opportunities, transitions between academia and other sectors, short-term employment, non-linear career pathways, and the skills needed to build adaptable and interdisciplinary professional profiles.
Next steps and forthcoming report
The JRC and the ADAPT Centre aim to build on the network created through the workshop by supporting further exchanges between early-career researchers and senior professionals and by exploring more practical, capacity-building activities.
