Background
Sustainable development is a core principle of the Treaty on European Union and a priority objective for the Union's internal and external policies. The Joint Research Centre started reflecting on the contribution of Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3) to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) already in 2018. Since then a consolidated reflection and methodologies such as S3 for SDGs or S4 (Smart Specialisation Strategies for Sustainability) have been developed in cooperation with experts and practitioners.
