Education and training

No Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees are offered in the nuclear field. At the university level a specialised nuclear engineering education can be achieved via the Institute of Nuclear and Physical Engineering at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava/Slovenska Technická Univerzita v Bratislave (STU). There is a possibility for a Doctorate in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (FEI) of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava/Slovenska Technická Univerzita v Bratislave (STU), which offers a degree in Nuclear Power Engineering.

The Nuclear Power Plant Research Institute (VUJE) is the authorised contractor for theoretical and simulator training, and organizes other training, as well as regional and international courses for the IAEA, Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic, US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and US Department of Energy.

Other institutions that are involved in nuclear research include: the Department of Nuclear Physics and Biophysics of the Comenius University in Bratislava/Univerzita Komenského v Bratislave, the Institute of Thermal Power Engineering of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava/Slovenska Technická Univerzita v Bratislave, and the Institute of Experimental Physics/Ústav experimentálnej Fyziky of the Slovak Academy of Sciences/Slovenská Akadémia Vied.

Human resources and knowledge management

There are four VVER 440/213 NPPs in Slovakia at two sites, two units in BOHUNICE, and two units in MOCHOVCE. These 4 reactors are generating half of the country’s electricity.

The commitment of the Slovakian government to the future of nuclear energy is strong. In February 2007, Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, and Enel's general director Fulvio Conti, announced that Italy's Enel, majority owner of Slovakia's dominant power producer, Slovenské elektrárne (SE), will complete the third and fourth units of the nuclear power plant at MOCHOVCE by 2013.

The main Slovakian authority is the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic/Úrad Jadrového Dozoru Slovenskej Republiky.

The Young Generation of the Slovak Nuclear Society/Mladá generácia Slovenskej nukleárnej spoločnosti and the Slovak Nuclear Society/Slovenská nukleárna spoločnost (SNUS) are highly involved in the preservation of the nuclear knowledge and other activities in the nuclear human resource area in Slovakia.
