Damyan Barantiev

Damyan Barantiev

Biography

Damyan is a project officer (scientific research) at the European Crisis Management Laboratory (ECML). He revises, analyses, and develops complex natural disaster codes related to the impact estimation of Tropical Cyclones (TCs) in the Global Disasters Alerts and Coordination System (GDACS), using his scientific potential in the field of atmospheric physics and his digital competence in programming languages. The results of his work are widely used in the activities of the Humanitarian Community worldwide and support the policies of DG ECHO not only during the peak of the different TCs seasons around the globe but also with any significant meteorological event triggering the need for humanitarian aid and civil protection.

Areas of expertise

  • Remote sensing measurements
  • Boundary Layer Meteorology
  • Coastal Meteorology and Climatology
  • Numerical Methods and Models Simulations
  • Time-series analysis

Professional achievements

Before joining the JRC, Damyan built his professional scientific career for 17 years in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) structure, 13 of which were spent at the Bulgarian national meteorological service. He has practical experience in the fields of vertical profiles of the wind and turbulent parameters, extreme winds, mesoscale modeling, model assessment, and numerical databases analysis.

Academic background

Damyan graduated in 2003 with a Master's in Physics specializing in Meteorology from Sofia University. He conducted his M.Sc. thesis on atmospheric pollution modeling and environmental prediction scenarios during his one-year occupation at the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology at the BAS (NIMH - BAS).

From 2008 to 2017, he worked as an “Assistant Professor” at the NIMH - BAS Observatory in Burgas. From 2010 to 2016, he pursued a doctorate at the NIMH - BAS in analysing the coastal Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) characteristics. He obtained a "Doctor" degree in the professional field of Physical Sciences - Remote Sensing of Earth and Planets.

Damyan took the academic position of "Senior Assistant Professor" in 2017 at the Meteorology Department of NIMH - BAS and later in the "Atmosphere" section of the Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (CAWRI – BAS). In 2019 - 2021, he was a post-doctoral student at CAWRI – BAS with a project on the study of the vertical structure of the atmosphere over the Black Sea coastal region using remote sensing methods and mesometeorological modeling.

In 2023, Damyan Barantiev took the academic position of "Associate Professor" at CAWRI – BAS and started his career in the European Commission's structure.
