EU Science Hub

To get AI right, Europe needs a coordinated strategy building

  • on our strengths in research and industry;
  • on our traditions in balancing the individual and societal interest, and
  • on our diversity which could be harnessed through local data sharing ecosystems.

EU leads Frontier Research

The EU is a leader in Frontier Research, contributing 30% of papers submitted to the top AI international conferences.

(Something more tangible on how to build on the strength and value of our research?)

Compared to US and China the EU is more balanced in number of industrial and R&D Players

Start-ups in AI

Europe has a good number of start-ups in AI accounting for 27% of the world total, and also a good level of venture capital funding, (also 27%)

However there is an issue about ability for start ups to scale up and withstand acquisition from larger international companies. So some targeted action on this is needed.

Europe has well balanced interests across all four main areas sub topics in AI: Machine learning methods; Connected & automated vehicles; Speech recognition & Natural language processing; and Face recognition. European strength in connected and automated vehicles and robotics (that falls under Machine learning methods) is a point to focus future investment.

Development local ecosystems

The EU's network of Digital Innovation Hubs could be central to the development of local ecosystems bringing AI training, data, computing and local partnerships together to develop AI solutions addressing local issues.

Internet of Things (IoT) and autonomous systems

Cloud computing and Edge computing determine the future of Internet of Things (IoT) and autonomous systems. According to Gartner and Machina Research (1), the IoT is a market likely to grow from $900 billion in 2014 to $4.3 trillion by 2024.

Edge computing will bring intelligence to the billions of devices and smart sensors that are going to be connected to the Internet by making them effective and addressing their latency issues.

This is achieved by processing (in real time) the data closer to its source through local data ecosystems.
