Description
The Gas Tank Testing Facility (GASTEF) is located at the Joint Research Centre of Petten (The Netherlands). It is dedicated to perform safety and performance evaluation of full-scale high pressure tanks used to store hydrogen (H2) or natural gas (CH4). GASTEF is designed to
- conduct "pneumatic cycling performance test" of the type approval regulations for hydrogen and natural gas vehicles (UN Regulation 134-ECE "GTR Nr- 13", EU Regulation 406/2010 and UN Regulation 110) and
- simulate a natural gas or hydrogen refuelling station in its main components (compressor, hydrogen cooler, dispenser, metering devices) and the interaction with high pressure on-board storage, which allows evaluating from a safety point of view the effect of different refuelling conditions on high pressure components.
Priority topics of GASTEF
- Safety and performance assessment of new concepts of compressed hydrogen and/or natural gas storage tanks;
- Assessment of hydrogen refuelling strategies: optimized fuelling protocols, less demanding pre-cooling needs, consequences of out-of-specification fuellings;
- Assessment of tank's material compatibility with e.g. high pressure hydrogen or hydrogen-compressed natural gas mixtures.
Definition and conditions of access
Access to the research infrastructure is granted on the basis of Access Units.
For GASTEF, the Access Unit corresponds to ' Weeks', which correspond to the time necessary to the preparation and execution of a testing campaign to full-fill the objectives of the project. For example a typical H2-cycle test of 1000 cycles takes approx. 5 weeks plus leak tests. Permeation tests of at least 500 hours, will take a minimum of 4 weeks. Experimental campaigns on tanks refuelling might take from one to several weeks depending on the number of conditions to be tested.
- Estimated total number of Weeks allocated to the call: 10 weeks
- Average number of Weeks per Project: 5 Weeks
- Estimated costs excluding consumables and expenses:
- Research infrastructure operated by JRC staff: 2358 € / Week*
- Research infrastructure operated by users: Not possible
Allocation of intellectual property rights:
- Intellectual property rights are allocated according to Paragraph III of Annex 1: Intellectual Property Rights.
Eligibility criteria
- The Lead User Institution and User Institutions (see definitions in the Framework) must be from an EU Member State, or country associated to the EU Research Programme Horizon 2020 (Iceland, Norway, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey, Israel, Moldova, Switzerland, Faroe Islands, Ukraine, Tunisia, Georgia, Armenia).
- The Lead User Institution must be from a university, research or public institution, or from a Small-Medium-Enterprise (SME).
- Ethical considerations in accordance with EU Law, in particular Art. 19 of Regulation (EU) 1291/2013, and applicable laws and regulations in the EU Member States.
- The proposal submission form is complete and complies with the instructions.
Selection criteria
Any proposal will be scrutinised in accordance with weighted selection criteria such as:
- Scientific implementation
- Access to SMEs and new Users
- Strategic relevance to the JRC
- Strategic importance for Europe
How to apply
The proposal must be prepared by using the template given in Annex 3.1 of the Framework and its annexes
During preparation of the proposal, applicants are encouraged to:
- Read the "Framework of Access to Joint Research Centre physical Research Infrastructures" and its annexes.
- Contact the research infrastructure at JRC-ENERGY-STORAGEec [dot] europa [dot] eu (JRC-ENERGY-STORAGE[at]ec[dot]europa[dot]eu) to assess feasibility aspects related to the capacity of the research infrastructure.
The proposal should be submitted to JRC-RI-OPEN-ACCESSec [dot] europa [dot] eu (JRC-RI-OPEN-ACCESS[at]ec[dot]europa[dot]eu) by the closing date of the call.
