Anna Berti Suman is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie and former Dutch Research Council post-doctoral fellow at the European Commission Joint Research Centre.

She is principal researcher of the project "SensJus" aimed at researching the potential of civic monitoring of environmental issues as a source of evidence for environmental litigation and as a tool to foster environmental mediation. The project combines desk research with ethnography, and aims at bringing this topic closer to interested communities, using experimental communicative methods including graphic novels and story-telling.

Anna obtained her PhD in 2020 after a four-years trajectory at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society, The Netherlands. Her PhD project aimed at investigating how civic monitoring influences the governance of environmental health risk and how the practice can be integrated with institutional models of risk governance through its social and policy uptake.

A booklet containing the key findings from the thesis can be freely downloaded here. Over the past years, Anna (co)authored a rich array of articles, books and edited volumes in the field.

Anna has a background in Law from the University of Bologna and Transnational Law from the University of Geneva. She is specialised in Empirical Legal Studies, International and European Environmental Law, Public Participation, and Health Law and Technology.

She has work and research experience in the health sector (Royal Brompton and Chelsea & Westminster Hospitals, London), Environmental Litigation (Unión de Afectados y Afectadas por las Operaciones Petroleras de Texaco, Ecuador and Greenpeace International, The Netherlands) and Water Law (Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe, and Fundación Chile, Chile).
